Supporting Education In The Gambia
We are proud to support a fundraising initiative led by Kulture Konnek to help build a library at Brikama Nema School in The Gambia
WatahGwaan is passionate about this campaign and is raising awareness of it within our community. All donations go directly to the GoFundMe campaign, ensuring that 100% of contributions benefit Brikama Nema School and the library project.
In April 2022, Kulture Konnek along with visiting friends, had the opportunity to visit Brikama Nema School in The Gambia. This visit was made possible by Mariana Jallow, who runs a hairdressing academy near the school, after we expressed interest in learning more about the Gambian education system.
Brikama Nema School serves over 2,200 students in the Brikama community. Despite the dedication and hard work of its teachers and leadership, the school faced serious challenges at the time, including a lack of electricity, clean water, and a functional library.
Moved by what we saw, we made a commitment to help.
Upon returning to the UK, Kulture Konnek and our supporters organised fundraising events to address the school’s most urgent needs. In November 2022, we returned to The Gambia to connect electricity to the school - an unforgettable moment filled with excitement, gratitude, and joy from both students and staff.
Encouraged by this success, we then focused on providing access to clean water. After further fundraising in the UK, we returned again in June 2023 to drill a water borehole. Once more, the reaction from the school community was one of immense relief and happiness, as teachers and students could finally access safe drinking water.
While these achievements have made a significant difference, there is still more to be done.
The Need for a School Library
Education is the foundation of sustainable development, and access to learning resources is essential for students to reach their full potential. Currently, Brikama Nema School lacks a library, limiting students’ access to books, research materials, and a supportive learning environment.
We are now seeking financial and material support to build and equip a school library that will serve as a central hub for learning, reading, and academic growth for both students and teachers.
Project Objectives
The library will aim to:
Improve students’ literacy, reading habits, and academic performance
Support teachers with reference materials for lesson planning
Encourage a culture of learning, research, and curiosity
Provide a safe, quiet space for study within the school
Beneficiaries
Primary: Students of Brikama Nema School
Secondary: Teachers and school staff
Wider Community: The Brikama community, with potential for future community learning initiatives
Expected Impact
With a functional library, students will:
Develop stronger reading and comprehension skills
Gain access to knowledge beyond their textbooks
Be better prepared for examinations and future educational opportunities
Teachers will benefit from improved teaching resources, and the overall quality of education at the school will be significantly enhanced.
Use of Funds
Donations will support:
Construction materials and labour
Furniture (bookshelves, tables, chairs)
Books and educational materials
Basic utilities and ongoing maintenance
A detailed budget is available upon request.
A Call to Action
Building a library at Brikama Nema School is an investment in education, opportunity, and the future of the children in this community.
We kindly ask for your support—whether financial or in-kind—to help make this project a reality.
Every contribution, no matter the size, will have a lasting impact.
Together, we can create a space that inspires learning, curiosity, and hope.
Thank you
Kulture Konnek
